Cummins has introduced a new and optimized marine QSK50 diesel engine for the Variable Speed Diesel Electric Propulsion (VSDE) market. Variable speed diesel generator sets are particularly suitable for low load applications such as offshore engineering vessels, passenger ships, ferries and fishing vessels, etc. The same as the traditional fixed speed diesel generator set, the variable speed diesel generator set consists of a diesel engine, a generator, a control system and a common base. But unlike traditional diesel-electric, VSDE utilizes a DC system that allows the engine to work at different speeds. Previous reports from system integrators have shown that this can lead to significant reductions in fuel consumption, reduced CO2 emissions, and a lighter overall unit weight for variable-speed diesel-electric systems than for fixed-speed applications. It can also reduce the user’s unit maintenance costs and prolong the service life of the engine. Existing power from the Cummins engine can also be used for VSDE, but the new 2,183-hp 1,800-rpm QSK50 is optimized for variable-rpm applications, optimizing fuel economy at various operating points. The power management system enables it to achieve better performance. Cummins will continue to introduce more power optimized for VSDE, all of which will meet the IMO Stage II emissions standard for the ISO E2 E3 test cycle.
